His Own Road

He leaves late in the night, leaves his memories behind,

Journeys far away from the place he’s been confined.

Travels To the uncertain, like a bird just been freed,

Restless like the wind, he runs to reach another speed,

Goes to find his freedom, find the challenge that he craves.

Swims to taste the ocean, runs to prove he’s not a slave,

Looks to see inside him, meet the challenge that he needs,

If only to prove himself life is more than fear and greed.

Feels the grass below him, tastes the freshness of clean air,

Treasures nature’s bounty, while there’s something left to share,

Walks along the shoreline, walks the miles into the hills,

To where he dreamed he’d be, where nature’s heart is beating still.

He Winds along the cliffs, getting Lost among the stone

The further that he travels, the greater he feels alone

Looks down at blue water as he stands upon the edge

Echoes all around, he curls his toes over the ledge,

Looks down into the abyss, doesn’t need to understand,

Jumps into empty space faster than he’s taught he can,

Leaps outside his comfort into something he doesn’t know,

Flying, falling, gulping, over sixty feet below,

Hates fear as it holds him, then suddenly he’s aware

He knows of nothing sweeter than the taste of freshest air.

Is this what freedom look like, instinct take him where he wants

Love for nature’s bounty, stronger than a lover’s bond.

He Journeys through a tunnel to find a tunnel of his own.

Down into a cavern, its beauty savoured alone.

Travels to a valley he once imagined in a dream,

Walks down a river to find a half-forgotten stream,

Like a famous painting he’s seen but is long since forgot.

Steps inside a new land treasured like work of art.

Precious memories he’ll create and now forever hold,

With no need for greed when he walks down his own road.

Lies besides a lake, feeling the breeze beneath the sun,

Wind ripples upon the water, how far that he has come.

He lies in contemplation, relaxing beneath the heat,

In the kingdom of no-where, there is no-one to defeat.

People along the road are empty faces never met,

Always followed by his shadow, a naked silhouette.

It lengthens in the distance, abandoning him slow.

Leaves him with the sunset, around him the darkness flows

He shelters in the silence; sleeps on the open ground.

Stars whisper in the moonlight, words without a sound.

The cold is his comfort, makes him feel alive,

The frost wakes him early, gives him purpose to survive.

His journey’s nearly over, now his time is running out,

More aware of the people and places he cares about.

Decisions to be taken, look different than before,

The big world is now a little bit – smaller to explore.

He Journeys through a tunnel to find a tunnel of his own.

Down into a cavern, its beauty savoured alone.

Travels to a valley he once imagined in a dream,

Walks down a river to find a half-forgotten stream,

Like a famous painting he’s seen but is long since forgot.

Steps inside a new land treasured like a work of art.

Precious memories he’ll create and now forever hold,

With no need for greed when he walks down his own road.

If only to prove himself, life is more than fear and greed.

Feels the grass below him, tastes the freshness of clean air,

Treasures nature’s bounty, while there’s something left to share,

Walks along the shoreline, walks the miles into the hills,

To where he dreamed he’d be, where nature’s heart is beating still.

Is this what freedom look like, instincts lead him where he wants

Drinking from nature’s bounty, a taste he’d long forgot.

Precious memories he’ll create and now forever hold,

No need for greed when he walks on his own road.
